Description
DUTY DESCRIPTION: Performs routine automotive maintenance and servicing work; performs related duties as required. The volunteer position is located in the Ada County Sheriff's Office.
Volunteer positions are unpaid.
PRIMARY VOLUNTEER JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
·Lubricates and greases automobiles and light trucks;
·Changes automatic transmission filters and drains torque converters;
·Drains and refills rear axles;
·Changes, rotates and repairs tires;
·Performs wheel balancing;
·Washes and cleans vehicles;
·Changes engine oil and replace various filters;
·Performs minor tune-ups, replaces sparkplugs, distributor caps, rotors, and ignition wires as required;
·Changes front and rear brakes as required, repack wheel bearings, and bleeds brake systems as required;
·Replaces belts and hoses, valve cover gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, water pumps, fuel pumps, thermostats, heater cores, and other minor repairs, as required; and
·Assists with the preparation new patrol or detective vehicles for service;
·Assists with the installation of overhead lights, siren and siren speaker, police radio, wiring harness, screen partition, shotgun rack, wig-wag headlight system, and antenna coax.
Requirements
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
·Currently possesses and maintains a valid Idaho drivers license;
·Experience in semi-skilled work in an automotive repair shop or garage and completion of a standard high school course is preferred.
·Knowledge of mechanical parts of automotive equipment;
·Knowledge of where and how a variety of components, accessories, and parts of systems, such as wheel cylinders, fuel lines and mufflers are installed;
·Knowledge of standard automotive tools and materials;
·Knowledge of the methods and practices of the trade;
·Skilled in removing and replacing parts and to make "tune-up" type adjustments and settings;
·Skilled in the care and use of common tools and a variety of test equipment;
·Skilled in lubricating and greasing automotive equipment;
·Ability to determine when parts should be cleaned and reinstalled, or replaced with new/rebuilt parts; and
·Ability to understand and effectively carry out simple oral and written instructions.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
·Must appear before an oral board and complete a polygraph and background investigation prior to entrance on duty.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
·The Automotive Serviceperson makes repairs while the vehicle is overhead, and where the parts worked on are in hard to reach places.
·The Serviceman must stand, bend, stretch, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
·The Serviceman must move parts, which may be heavy in order to accomplish a specific repair.
·Most of the work is performed inside where it maybe drafty and noisy, and fumes from vehicles are usually present.
·The Automotive Serviceperson works on hard surfaces for long periods of time.
·There may be times when he/she must crawl under vehicles and make repairs while on hard, usually damp, surfaces.
·Dirt, dust, and grease are always present.
·Vehicle fluids, such as battery acids and hydraulic fluids, may cause burns or irritate the skin.
·There is frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts, bruises, shocks, burns, and strains.
