Molding Process Engineer

JOB DESCRIPTION


The Molding Process Engineer will be the primary technical resource for the injection molding department. We seek candidates with proven success in managing multiple projects, while also leading day-to-day process improvements.

 

Key responsibilities include the following:

  • Lead/manage multiple projects to support quality improvements and cost reductions of existing products utilizing a working knowledge of various thermoplastic resins, manufacturing techniques and engineering practices.
  • Develop improvements to existing products and processes and fulfill business opportunities (target costs, timing and customer requirements), while meeting all applicable codes and standards.
  • Improve manufacturing methods through upgrade of machines and auxiliary equipment and processes and make recommendations regarding facility and product design and equipment to meet manufacturing goals. Support and maintain productivity and mold cavitations target levels.
  • Work with both internal and external resources to justify and implement new equipment and/or processes; prepare production proposals.
  • Provide engineering support to the production and maintenance teams in equipment/processes troubleshooting and quality problems. Support New Products and Modular Engineering activities. Develop, document and qualify (PPAP) new tooling processes, optimizing existing processes and recommend cost savings initiatives.
  • Generate, modify and trouble-shoot machine and process programs. Support and provide technical knowledge and skills to the molding team.
  • Generate accurate equipment set-up and operating instructions.
  • Initiate appropriation requests for major projects. Support development of mold capacity and justify budget plans for expense and capital spending.
  • Evaluate and investigate design change requests from internal/external sources, taking action and making changes which will improve product quality, reliability, manufacturability and cost.
  • Compile, prepare and present data for project updates and technical presentations to staff and/or management.
  • Direct/coach engineering and production associates to guide product/process improvement efforts to meet project goals.
  • Develop and implement procedures and training
  • Support and participate in Lean initiatives and 5-S activities

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum 5 years experience, hands-on injection molding process management with a minimum of 3 years in the role of a Process Engineer or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of most thermoplastic engineered grade resins, injection molding machines and all auxiliary support equipment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of tooling prints, part prints, inspection procedures and SPC analysis.
  • Demonstrate troubleshooting and problem solving solutions through the use of DOE, 8-D and Six Sigma disciplines/methodologies.
  • Knowledge and working understanding of tool construction and corrective / repair recommendations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in injection molding across a range of engineering grade (filled, and unfilled) resins in multi-cavity molds. Must have the ability to drive troubleshooting, and development of sustained solutions to meet customer requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing molding process parameters for new applications using scientific molding techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience leading capital equipment projects.
  • Proven communication skills and ability to lead within a multi-functional team

Preferred Experience:

  • RJG master molder II certification or equivalent
  • 3-D CAD experience (Pro/Engineer preferred)
  • Experience with leading development of multi-cavity injection molds (i.e. specifying, quoting, procurement, and qualification).
  • Experience with quoting new injection molding applications (including design for manufacturability assessment)
  • Experience with developing documentation, and training of process technicians in the use of scientific molding.

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Plastics Engineering or Plastics Engineering Technology or equivalent required.
