Job Description
As a Hospital Corpsman, your responsibilities may include providing emergency medical treatment, transporting sick and injured personnel, or working in the field with Special Forces, the Seabees or the Marine Corps.
What Will You Do?
You’ll work hand-in-hand with top physicians and other health-care professionals, playing a key role in ensuring the health and wellbeing of our servicemembers – wherever they may be. As part of this occupational specialty, you may:
- Help prevent and treat diseases and injuries
- Render emergency medical treatment
- Administer medications, including injections
- Take and process X-rays and operate X-ray equipment
- Serve as an operating room technician for general and specialized surgery
- Operate sophisticated medical diagnostic treatment equipment
- Specialize in a number of fields, including radiology, search and rescue, optical and preventive medicine
Skills and Training
Working with an air squadron, with Special Forces or in a hospital or clinic, the advanced medical training you receive in the Navy Reserve prepares you for numerous specialties. You may have the opportunity to earn Department of Labor certification allowing you to work as an emergency medical technician (EMT). Your training may also prepare you to be, or enhance your current career as, a surgical technician, respiratory therapist, nuclear medical technologist, physical therapist’s assistant, pharmacist’s assistant or medical records clerk.
Most of the on-the-job training in the Medical field directly translates to credit at colleges and universities. Advanced technical and operational training is also available in many specialized fields.
Duties and responsibilities directly translate to careers in the civilian medical field. As long as people need medical services, individuals with skills in these areas will be in high demand.

No prior military experience is necessary to become an enlisted member of the Navy Reserve. However, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Be at least 18 years of age and no older than 40 upon joining
- Have a high school diploma (GED certificates valid in some instances)
- Meet Navy Reserve physical standards
- Get a qualifying score on the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) exam
