CLINICAL PRACTICE PROGRAM SPECIALIST

Job Summary

_FLSA Status: Exempt

Exemplifies and promotes evidence based nursing practice and excellence in the care of patients. Maintains

practice excellence through involvement with selected patient populations. Develops, implements and

evaluates nursing practice standards with teams of clinical nurses and other APRNs across the continuum of

care at MedStar Health. Conducts formal and informal educational programs/experiences for clinical nurses

and others to support patient care programs. Evaluates patient outcomes, identifies populations at risk and

proposes clinical practice solutions. Develops innovative procedures, and polices to improve care.

Participates in and supports a broad range of committees, councils and other groups that focus on exemplary

nursing practice. Supports a scholarly and rigorous approach to practice through the implementation of

nationally recognized programs such as NICHE and the Iowa model of evidence based practice. Participates

in professional nursing organizations applicable to area of clinical expertise.

Qualifications

Job Requirements

BS in Nursing and MS in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from accredited

programs. Education as CNS with a focus in adult/ gerontology, family/individual across the life span, or

another patient population recognized in the APRN National Consensus model.

EXPERIENCE: 5 years of practice development experience with current experience as a CNS or program

specialist in a progressive academic medical center or complex health care system. Experience must also

include current regulatory and accreditation experience with demonstrated expertise in the implementation of

evidence based practice, along with evidence of participation in educational or planning activities associated

with a school of nursing. Experience in implementation science and whole scale change and experience in a

Magnet Hospital strongly preferred.

LICENSE/CERT/REG: Eligible for RN license in DC and Maryland; National certification in a recognized

clinical specialty strongly preferred; required within 6 months of hire

Skills: Demonstrated expertise in clinical nursing practice including the role components of clinical nurse

specialist practice and developing clinical practice guidelines. Demonstrated command of a wide range of

nursing models and concepts including models of evidence based practice, whole scale change and

implementation science. Knowledge and ability to use computer applications in the analysis of data, writing,

and presentation of information. Effective written and verbal communication skills with meticulous attention to

detail. Strong interpersonal skills and strong sense of personal accountability. Strong track record of

establishing external relationships, which facilitate and enhance the image of nursing practice at a regional

and national level. Ability to work within a data driven organization, particularly with respect to evidence based

practice and effective analytical ability to solve complex problems and issues in a pragmatic way. Ability to

function effectively in a fast paced and changing environment with multiple priorities and objectives.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Acts as role model for professional practice by integrating all components of the professional role: clinical

practice, consultation, collaboration, leadership, education and program evaluation.

Applies advanced knowledge and skills towards solving patient care problems through evaluation of IPOCs

and CPGs.

Collaborates in the creation of interdisciplinary models of care.

Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department

policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation

regulations.

Develops (writes) and facilitates implementation and evaluation of clinical practice guidelines for specific

patient populations.

Develops, implements and evaluates nursing practice standards with teams of clinical nurses and other

APRNs across the continuum of care at MedStar Health.

Evaluates current research findings for specialty and determines efficacy in practice settings, Communicates

and collaborates with colleagues for indicated changes in practice.

Evaluates patient outcomes, identifies populations at risk and proposes clinical practice solutions. Develops

innovative procedures, and polices to improve care.

Leads the implementation of system wide programs of nursing care which are evidence based such as

NICHE, primary nursing.

Participates in multidisciplinary meetings and on multidisciplinary committees and represents the department.

Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Staffs a MedStar Health clinical governance council.

Works across the continuum to insure practice is consistent and incorporates the latest thinking and best

practices about transitions of care.

Works with entity based leaders to insure a consistent approach to nursing care across the system.

Physical Requirements

INDIRECT PATIENT CARE/Contact: Visual acuity. Ability to hear and orally communicate. Ability to read,

comprehend and write the English language. Manual dexterity. Moderate to heavy physical effort: Physical

mobility with ability to lift, push or pull up to and including 35 lbs. Walking, standing, sitting for prolonged

periods. Handling of patient and or equipment including lifts, rolls, transfers, etc. with the use of mandatory

Safe Patient Lifting Equipment. Ability to appropriately wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Working Conditions

*May be required to travel to various locations as needed. Reliable transportation may be required.

*Working at another site and/or other MedStar departments or programs may be required.

ADA: Some skills/physical requirements can be altered and appropriate accommodations or use of adaptive

equipment will be made in accordance with the ADA. Associates should discuss accommodations and

provide medical documentation to Occupational Health.

ATTENDANCE: Regular job attendance is an essential job function.

INDIRECT PATIENT CARE/CONTACT: Exposure to patients, visitors and family members with a variety of

physical and psychiatric/mental health conditions. Potential for exposure to contagious diseases, blood and

body fluids, chemicals, medicinal preparations, potential ionizing radiation, unpleasant odors, and other

conditions common to a clinical environment. Mandatory requirement for use of Personal Protective

Equipment (PPE) when indicated per policy. Position may require flexible scheduling, off-shifts, weekend,

holiday, on-call and/or overtime hours of work in accordance with department policy or procedures.

REPORTS TO: Vice President Nursing Practice Innovation and works closely with Senior Vice President and

Chief Nursing Officer
