Valley Care System boasts a rich history based on a foundation of identifying heath care needs, asking the communities what services can meet these needs and then responding to those requests.

In 1881, some civic-minded Mahoning County citizens believed that Youngstown needed its own hospital due to an increasing amount of industry and industrial accidents. As such, the Youngstown Hospital Association was formed.

Youngstown Hospital (Southside Hospital’s predecessor) admitted its first patient, who arrived by horse and buggy on January 1, 1883. The 20-bed hospital on Court Street, with its four staff members and seven visiting physicians, logged 59 patient admissions during that first year.

The Youngstown Hospital Association opened Northside Medical Center in 1929, setting a benchmark as one of the first multi-unit hospitals in the nation. Tod Babies’ and Children’s Hospital opened in the spring of 1972 by Western Reserve HealthCare (the former Youngstown Hospital Association).

Through the decades, and a host of rapidly changing health care issues, Western Reserve HealthCare grew. The system evolved into Valley Care System in 1997 when Northside Medical Center and Tod Children’s Hospital merged with Trumbull Memorial Hospital.

More than 120 years after its founding, Valley Care System is still committed to providing the best health care services possible to residents of the Valley.

HealthGrades Ranks Forum Hospitals as Five- Star Hospitals HealthGrades, the nation’s leading independent healthcare ratings company ranked Valley Care System’s Northside Medical Center and Trumbull Memorial Hospital as five-star hospitals. The information comes from the “Tenth Annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in America Study,” the most comprehensive annual assessment of hospital quality. The report provides quality ratings based on three years of outcome data from 40 million hospitalization records of the nation’s 5,000 hospitals. HealthGrades produces ratings for every non-federal hospital in 27 diagnoses and procedures. This prestigious ranking shows how Valley Care System continues to have to of the best hospitals, ranking at the top 10 -15 percent in the country. “This couldn’t happen without the quality effort of these hospitals”, says Alex Peck. Ratings are risk adjusted for mortality and complication rates to account for differences in patient populations between hospitals for comparison, and hospitals are then assigned 5-star (best), 3-star (as expected) or 1-star (poor) quality ratings for diagnoses. Patients that choose five star rated hospitals like Valley Care System in terms of risk-adjusted mortality rates actually have an approximate 71 percent lower chance of dying compared to a one star rated hospital. Not to mention, patients have an approximate 52 percent lower chance of dying in a five star rated hospital compared to the U.S. hospital average.
