The year was 1920. Prohibition went into effect. Women gained the right to vote. This was also the year Dauterive Hospital opened its doors. One young physician, Dr. Henry Dauterive, had a vision to bring quality healthcare to the citizens of Iberia Parish. With a pioneering spirit, he worked diligently with a small staff of nurses, doctors and medical personnel to open Dauterive Hospital on Duperier Avenue in New Iberia.

One of Dr. Dauterive's sons, Eugene Dauterive, MD, remembers the original Dauterive Hospital and his father's commitment to providing the very best medical care possible to the community and people he loved.

As the years passed, Dauterive Hospital grew and expanded at the Duperier Avenue location, eventually developing into a 47-bed facility. In order to continue to meet the needs of an ever-changing and expanding community, the hospital would need to continue its growth. In 1970, Dauterive Hospital was sold and in 1974 it moved to its present location on North Lewis Avenue. Here a modern Dauterive Hospital continues to grow and develop.
