Overview

Hosparus, a fully accredited, nonprofit hospice organization, provides care, comfort and counseling for people facing life-limiting illnesses in Kentucky and Southern Indiana.

We are the region's leading hospice care provider and serve more than 5,000 patients a year. We help people face end-of-life issues with as much care and thought as any other milestone in life so they can enjoy the best quality of life possible.

For more than 30 years, our extensive planning and counseling services have helped patients and families deal with the many issues that surround the end of life. We offer a measure of control in situations that can seem out of control. Those who have used our services tell us that there is comfort in knowing what to do and what to expect in this part of life.

Culture

Hosparus offers palliative care, also sometimes described as care for comfort. Definition of palliative care. The World Health Organization describes palliative care thusly: "Palliative care is the active total care of patients whose disease is not responsive to curative treatment. Control of pain, of other symptoms, and of psychological, social, and spiritual problems is paramount. The goal of palliative care is to provide the best possible quality of life for patients and their families." Interdisciplinary team. Our Palliative Care Consultation Team includes a physician or nurse practitioner, a registered nurse, a certified social worker, and a clinically trained chaplain, all of whom have special expertise in palliative care. Other professionals and volunteers are added as determined by patient needs. Our team works on-site in participating acute-care facilities, collaborating with the patient's primary physician and hospital health care team.

Care

Hosparus provides care, comfort and counseling for people facing life-limiting illnesses. We offer a measure of control in situations that can seem out of control. Those who have used our services tell us there is comfort in knowing what to do and what to expect in this part of life.

Comfort vs. cure. Hosparus affirms life and promotes quality of life through all phases of an illness. Our care provides comfort rather than cure. Hosparus neither prolongs life nor hastens death. We provide physical, emotional and spiritual care to people with life-limiting illness and their families. We help our patients maintain quality of life and live their days to the fullest. We emphasize symptom management and palliative care and support for the entire family.

Respect. The end of life is a special time with special needs. We understand the emotions surrounding a progressive illness and can help put them in perspective. Fear, anger, and grief are normal responses. We respect each person’s living and dying experiences. We enter into these experiences with our patients and families, providing support, understanding and guidance. We empower patients and families through this most significant time. A team of sensitive, skilled professionals and volunteers tailors its services to meet the needs of each individual patient and family.
