Overview
Vitran Corporation is a North American provider of freight services and distribution solutions to a wide variety of companies and Industries. Vitran offers less-than-truckload (LTL) service throughout Canada and the United States utilizing its own infrastructure and exclusive partners. Vitran Logistics provides special distribution solutions that range from inventory consolidation to responsibility for the complete distribution function as well as highway and rail brokerage. Vitran also provides premium same-day and next-day Truckload (TL) services in the U.S. Midwest.
These services are provided by 2,700 employees and associates located at more than 100 facilities and offices in the United States and Canada. Vitran uses 5,600 pieces of equipment, including tractors, trailers, and containers, operated by 1,500 drivers and independent contractors.

Vitran Express, Inc. accepts applications at any time for both Data Entry and Customer Service representative positions, described below. Enquiries for Driver, Dock Worker, and Mechanic opportunities should be directed to the local Vitran facility as those facilities have the most current information regarding any open positions. We may have openings in the following areas: LTL Drivers These are new positions to accommodate our expansion. Positions include Local pickup & delivery routes and Linehauls. Peddle experience preferred for Local routes. Monday - Friday. No weekends or Long Haul. Requires CDL Class A, with Hazmat, Doubles & Triples Endorsements. Dockworkers These are new positions to accommodate our expansion. Evening hours. Positions include loading and unloading freight from trailers and moving freight on the dock. Forklift experience preferred, but not required. Data Entry Full and Part-time positions available at our Winsted and Indianapolis General Offices. Position includes billing, manifesting, coding and other general clerical skills. Evening hours. Requires excellent keyboard and 10 key skills. Diesel Mechanics Positions include maintenance and repairs to our fleet of 630 tractors and 1750 trailers. Previous diesel mechanics experience preferred. Customer Service Representatives These positions are located at the Winsted, MN office. Key responsibilities include focusing on customer contact via telephone to take shipment data, advise on delivery status and general clerical duties. Positions require excellent telephone skills, commitment to customer service, and data entry skills.
Career Opportunities
Vitran Express will implement a 5.5% general rate increase effective May 2, 2005. This increase will affect customers who do not have contracts or other contractual agreements. The absolute minimum charge will increase to $69.50. This increase will also affect Vitran’s 507 rates for shipments moving to Canada. Vitran has done its best in this past year to try and keep cost increases at a minimum. With increases in fuel, health care, steel and driver wages, we feel that this increase is appropriate and necessary to ensure our customers of uninterrupted service.

The entire industry is struggling with finding enough qualified drivers to meet growing demand. Our ability to keep wages high enough to retain and attract new drivers is our life blood if we are to remain competitive.

Steel costs have raised the price of new tractor, trailer, and forklift orders by as much as 17%. The continued impact of the newer EPA mandated engines continues to erode fuel efficiency as these new engines continue to be integrated into our fleet. Maintenance costs associated with these new engines are also 7 -11% higher with some of the initial models having a higher frequency of mechanical breakdowns.

Security costs associated with border clearance involving both U.S. and Canadian customs will continue to escalate in the coming year. These added administrative costs along with delays at the border are costing us time and money that must be passed onto our customers.

All of us continue to feel the impact of higher health care. Our industry in particular is affected due to the high percent of cost associated with labor. Almost 65% of our cost is related to people, a much higher percent than most other businesses.
