Overview
In 1920, the Johnston Community School District awarded its first diplomas to a high school graduating class of six students. Today, graduating classes number about 270 students and in the coming years, that number will continue to grow.

Approximately 5,400 students in kindergarten through 12th grade attend the Johnston Community School District. Our yearly growth averages 200 students. Our district has four elementary schools, two middle schools, one senior high school, and one alternative school for ninth through 12th graders. A fifth elementary will open in the fall of 2007. We also provide before/after school childcare, preschool and adult education programs through Community Education.

The district covers 40 square miles and serves the community of Johnston as well as parts of Urbandale, Des Moines and the surrounding rural areas of Grimes and Granger. The school district employs over 850 people and operates with a general fund budget of 42 million dollars. It is the 14th largest school district in the state of Iowa and the third largest employer in Johnston.
