A Great Place to Live

Brevard County. Right at Home on The Edge of the Ocean.

A Great Place To Call Home
Since the emergence of the Space Program more than 40 years ago, Brevard County has become a hot spot for new residents. In fact, nearly 10,000 people relocate to the Space Coast each year — many from the Midwest and Northeast. With an average temperature of 72 degrees, and more than 70 miles of sunny beaches, it's easy to see why Brevard County has been called "one of Florida's best-kept secrets."

But there is much more to the Space Coast than beautiful beaches. Brevard's business sector is healthy and well balanced for a community its size. With the Kennedy Space Center, a NASA headquarters, and related aerospace and defense companies as a base, the Brevard economy also boasts a thriving citrus industry, commercial fishing, tourism, light manufacturing and electronics and other high-tech companies.

Mixing Business with Pleasure
Residents and guests in Brevard County enjoy an exciting cultural calendar year-round. The area enjoys active community theater programs, a semi-professional theater, a 500-seat performing arts center and almost weekly musical concerts performed by The Brevard Symphony Orchestra and the Florida Space Coast Philharmonic. Top-rated national entertainment, including musicians, comedians and Broadway shows, can be seen at the 2,000-seat King Center for the Performing Arts in Melbourne.

Recently, Brevard County attracted some national attention of its own as it served as the location for film and television projects including the TV show The Cape, Ron Howard's film Apollo 13 and Jodie Foster's Contact. It seems the Space Center and great weather are winning combinations when it comes to Hollywood, too.

Brevard Shows it's A Good Sport
Brevard is also home to a number of exciting professional sporting teams. The Cocoa Expos compete in the U.S. Interregional Soccer League and the Brevard County Manatees are local favorites competing in baseball's Class A Florida State League. The Washington Nationals Major League Baseball team calls Brevard "home" for spring training and plays pre-season games in the beautiful Space Coast Stadium.

And, as every resident and visitor knows, Central Florida theme parks are the world's best. Spending a day at Walt Disney World or Universal Studios is a great way to entertain the whole family. The Astronaut Hall of Fame and the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex provide space-oriented education and entertainment. And Brevard's own Air Force Space & Missile Museum, The Gallery of Spaceflight, and The Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum celebrate the area's unique heritage.

Brevard Schools Make the Grade
There are 78 public schools in Brevard County with more than 68,000 students. Students score well above both state and national averages for standardized tests and high school dropout rates are remarkably low. Residents have plenty of opportunities for higher education, too. There are eight colleges and universities in the area-with curricula as diverse as the business climate.

The Sun, The Sea, The Fun
Residents also enjoy almost endless choices for sporting and leisure. Boating and water-related activities are by far the most popular. In fact, the number of registered pleasure craft in the county reaches nearly 30,000! Six cruise ships also make home port at Brevard County's Port Canaveral.

Other activities include surfing, swimming, skiing, sailing, diving and fishing — there's something for everyone in the water in Brevard! There's even the largest ice skating complex in the entire Southeast just five minutes from the hospital! For those athletes who prefer to stay on the land, there are more than 20 lush golf courses and 18 active tennis clubs. For the nature lover, the county is dotted with parks and preserves.

Building our Future Together

Welcome To Wuesthoff Health System.
We're Committed To Building Our Future Together.
All the recruitment letters, corporate brochures and advertisements can't begin to match what you'll learn about your next employer by listening to the people who know that employer best — the women and men who already work there.

The commitment to quality care, what Wuesthoff calls its higher standard, is what impressed me the most.

Let's be honest. Most hospitals have good health benefits. But Wuesthoff doesn't make the associate pay for most of them.

With its growth and development in recent years, Wuesthoff has given me the opportunity to grow and develop as well.

It sounds a little weird. Every other hospital I've worked in has stressed patients first foremost and always. Sometimes, even to the point where it almost insults associates. But Wuesthoff administrators do it a little bit differently. They say, 'If we do right by our associates, then they'll do right by our patients.' And, you know what? They're right.

With a pension plan, tax-deferred investments, payroll deduction for my credit union savings and U.S. Savings Bonds and more discounts than I can keep track of, I've built a lot of security during my career at Wuesthoff.

The Wuesthoff associates quoted above — recent hires and long-term associates, young and old, clinicians and support staff — tell our story better than we can. When it comes to our associates, it's a story nearly 60 years old, a story of growing together to build something of which we can be proud, a story about a higher standard, a higher standard of commitment:

We are as committed to our associates as we are to our patients. We are as committed to helping our associates learn and develop as we are to developing our health care system. We are as committed to building teamwork among and between our units as we are to building a 21st Century healthcare system. We are as committed to providing our associates with a full range of benefits as we are to providing local employers and payors with competitive rates for quality healthcare services. We are as committed to enabling our associates to grow financially strong and secure as we are to ensuring our own bottom line remains strong so that we can meet the healthcare needs of all who need our care regardless of their ability to pay. We are as committed to helping our associates lead healthy lives as we are to ensuring the health and wellness of the several hundred thousand residents and visitors whose lives we touch each year. We are as committed to including our associates in our participative style of management and decision-making as we are to ensuring representatives of the communities we serve provide advice, counsel and governance for all we do as a community-based healthcare provider. We are as committed to helping those of our associates who fall on hard times and need a helping hand as we are to bringing the full scope of our services to the indigent and medically underserved in our community.

To see what these commitments mean in dollars and cents, actual programs and services, please speak with your Wuesthoff recruitment and employment specialist for more details and information.

Setting a higher Standard

Your Future Begins Here at Wuesthoff Health System. Setting A Higher Standard in the Heart of Florida's Spacecoast. In 1941, Wuesthoff Memorial Hospital opened its 10-bed facility to the residents of East Central Florida.

Since then, the community-oriented hospital, located in Brevard County, has remained true to its founding commitment: To provide a higher standard of care to every patient, every day. Today, Wuesthoff Health System is one of the most-respected, long-established hospitals in the Central Florida area. Providing a full range of comprehensive healthcare services, Wuesthoff touches an average of 2,000 lives each day. Yet, despite the significant growth and change Wuesthoff has experienced, the original commitment to a higher standard of healthcare has never wavered.

What is the Higher Standard?
As the company's hallmark, "a higher standard" has been the guiding force for Wuesthoff's evolution from a small, community hospital to the completely integrated, multi-level healthcare system it is today. The higher standard is a promise made by every staff member to uphold one primary goal — excellence in service and care. In fact, U.S. News & World Report recently recognized this dedication to quality care. In its annual ranking of hospitals nationwide, U.S. News rated Wuesthoff Hospital consistently higher than all other Brevard County hospitals.

Quality People, Quality Care
Wuesthoff Health System is a dynamic, growth-minded, people-oriented hospital. We remain committed to bringing the best available healthcare to our patients. Accordingly, we will continue to utilize the latest medical technology, techniques and procedures. We will increase our community services through outreach and educational programs. And, we will work to expand our presence in Brevard County.

By working together as a team, Wuesthoff associates develop a special bond. They take pride in their jobs, in their professions and in the health system they support. And, Wuesthoff takes pride in them. Because it's not the building or the technology that makes a great healthcare system — it's the people and their commitment to quality care. After all, they are the foundation on which the hospital was built and our Higher Standard depends.

Focus On Family
Sharing a common goal helps Wuesthoff's 2,600 plus healthcare workers and support staff, and more than 215 active staff physicians, work as a unified team. Each year, this Wuesthoff family of professionals provides more than $9 million in charity care to the indigent, medically underserved and uninsured of Brevard County; $6 million in care to Medicaid recipients; and $40 million in care to Medicare recipients. A busy hospital for a facility its size, Wuesthoff admits an average of 10,000 patients and treats nearly 30,000 cases in the Emergency Department each year.

However, even as the numbers increase, Wuesthoff is still dedicated to bringing each patient a higher standard of healthcare. The Wuesthoff philosophy is to know the patients and their families personally, listen to their questions and concerns, and understand their individual needs. This commitment not only ensures the best care possible, but instills a sense of well-being in every patient Wuesthoff treats. In essence, Wuesthoff associates carry out the commitment to a higher standard by caring for patients as though they are family.
