Mental Health Center of Denver, MHCD, a private charitable 501 (c)(3) organization, was founded in 1989 through a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation when community leaders recognized the need for a more responsive system of care. This grant provided resources to the community to design a new structure for community mental health, one that was less fragmented, more efficient and more effective for mental health consumers. The result was the consolidation
of four community mental health organizations
into what is now the Mental Health Center of Denver.
MHCD is charged with developing and maintaining a system of care for the mentally ill in Denver.(Executive Order 89—City and County of Denver)Nearly 460 highly qualified professionals serve 5,600 Denver residents each year. Our staff includes psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, as well as pharmacists, social workers, counselors, case managers, teachers and hundreds of others who support these professionals.MHCD provides a wide array of mental health services, including specialized services for children and teenagers, men and women with serious mental illness
and people at risk of losing their homes. We

Deaf and hard of hearing, and provide special services for Denver’s Hispanic community.
In 2004, MHCD provided more than 490,000 individual services ranging from court evaluations to full-day education/treatment for elementary and middle school students, individual and group therapy, family counseling and monitoring of medication when required. In addition, we help consumers prepare for, obtain and keep jobs.
