The Village was founded in 1973 as a not-for-profit agency and was the first residential treatment program licensed by the State of Florida, Department of Children and Families. Remembering names like "dope fiends" and other, less flattering terminology reminds us of the tremendous change and growth that have taken place, both in terms of programs and services offered, and in the technological advancement of the field of addiction. For those who remember early philosophies of the Therapeutic Community, for instance, The Village once believed that it was okay to teach "responsible drinking"- yet was the first of the U.S. Therapeutic Communities to announce that total abstinence from all psycho-active drugs, including alcohol, was a key to success!
Different modalities of treatment have been developed for adults and adolescents that allow more flexibility to build services around client needs. These services include a wide range of individual and group therapeutic rehabilitation services in both residential and outpatient settings. Behavioral, mental, and physical health counseling is reinforced by vocational/educational assessments and applied services. Referrals and linkages to appropriate health and independent living support agencies are integrated into each client's treatment plan. Adult and adolescent Substance abuse and HIV, Hepatitis A, B, & C, TB, and STD prevention, education, and outreach are ongoing activities. The Village targets youth/adolescents through after school, school based and in-home intervention.
For over thirty (30) years, The Village has been providing comprehensive (holistic) multidimensional treatment to adults and adolescents, males and females, suffering from chemical dependency, mental illness, dual disorders, delinquency and related behavioral problems. Each year, more than 1000 adolescents, adults and/or their families, most of whom are indigent, receive clinical services at The Village.
The Village philosophy is to utilize the best science-based information to interpret our mission and to serve our clients. Addiction is a chronic, relapsing disease and is, many times, accompanied by mental disorders and other behavioral problems that may or may not be the direct result of the addiction.
