In 1911, Frank C. Mars made the first Mars candies in his Tacoma, Washington kitchen and established Mars’ first roots as a confectionery company. In the 1920s, Forrest E. Mars, Sr. joined his father in business and together they launched the MILKY WAY® bar. In 1932, Forrest, Sr. moved to the United Kingdom with a dream of building a business based on the philosophy of a “mutuality of benefits” for all stakeholders – this vision serves as the foundation of the Mars, Incorporated we are today.
Based in McLean, Virginia, Mars has net sales of more than $30 billion and six business segments including Petcare, Chocolate, Wrigley, Food, Drinks and Symbioscience. You can find out about our brands here.
More than 65,000 Associates worldwide are putting our Mars Principles in action every day to make a difference for people and the planet through our performance.
A mutually rewarding experience.
Work. Realize your ambitions. And realize there’s more to being in business than just making a profit. That’s the Mars philosophy. And the opportunity we offer every one of our Associates. An opportunity to take what you do and make it mean more for you, for those around you and for the planet.
What you get here is challenging, interesting work. You get the tools you need to do a great job and you get to have the best possible people on your side to help you do it. And at the same time as getting to find ways to do business better today than we did it yesterday and driving a great career, you also get to build a more enlightened business and drive sustainability.
Because it’s never just about a single person, a single project or a single brand. It’s about how you can grab everything that’s within your reach here and use it to pursue mutual, long-term gain. It’s about having ideas. And ideals. Being prepared to risk failure because the promise of success means we’ll all be a little better off. It’s that mix of integrity and ambition that makes Mars such a special place to work. And why working here is always about more than just a job.
Freedom, responsibility and a business to call your own.
Mars people are known as Associates for a reason. It’s because we expect each and every one of them to run the business as their own. Whether you are in the factory making sure our machines run well, a graduate learning how to be a leader of tomorrow or a senior manager in any of our functions, the expectation is the same. You’ll have freedom you’ve not experienced before. A lot of freedom. And with that freedom comes responsibility.
So at the same time, we expect our associates to grab everything that’s within their reach and use it to develop themselves. You see, control over how your future unfolds here is firmly in your hands. Exactly how that happens, though, could be in any number of ways. Because we provide a structure for development in the broadest sense, one that can be used to drive your career across countries and business segments.
No surprise to learn, then, that we aim to attract exceptional people. The kind who have tons of talent and who don’t just wait for things to drop into their lap, they go out and grab life. People who can take responsibility for everything and anything from revolutionizing the way we pack pet food, to improving the lives of cocoa farmers and their families. If you’re one of those outstanding people then you’ll get a chance to do great work here and all kinds of possibilities will be open to you.
Open-plan offices, approachable people, honest communication.
No walls. No borders. No limits to what’s possible. Our culture is based on open, honest communication. And we don’t let anything stand in the way of that. Literally. You see we got rid of private office spaces to create accessible environments way back in 1943. And it was one of the best things we ever did. So today no-one, and we really mean no-one, not even a single CEO, has a separate office.
Our approach works. And today you can see it working all around you, in all corners of the world. We’re based in more than 55 countries, operate out of more than 370 locations and do business on every continent. That business ranges from chocolate to petcare, drinks to symbioscience. And the professionals who drive it are experts in everything from finance to sales to engineering to human resources.
But walk into any Mars building, anywhere in the world, and you’ll find the same thing. Open space, open communication, approachable people talking the same language and working together in entrepreneurial ways, because they treat the business as their own. And even though we’re a very decentralized business, one that encourages decisions to be taken locally, once you’ve seen one Mars building you’ve seen them all.
And it’s no surprise that others agree. So much, in fact, that in 2011, Great Place to Work® and Fortune.com named Mars one of the Top 25 World's Best Multinational Workplaces, praising us for “…developing a working culture that facilitates collaboration and a sense of communication. An open door policy that seeks to break down barriers and makes everyone, CEO through to Associate, more approachable.”
