Dignity Health - Bakersfield Memorial
Bakersfield Memorial Hospital
found its roots during a citizen campaign formed by civic leaders and healthcare professionals in the early 1950s to build a new community hospital. This drive led to the opening of the original 112-bed Greater Bakersfield Memorial Hospital in 1956 at its current location. Funding generated through a nonprofit association contributed to the development of this community-owned institution.
As a result of sustained local support since its founding, Bakersfield Memorial Hospital has continued to grow to meet the needs of the community. Numerous construction projects completed through the years have built BMH into the regional medical center it is today. The facility now includes over 250 general acute beds; over 45 specialty intensive care or postanesthesia care beds; 13 operating rooms; a heavily used Emergency Room with a Chest Pain Center; a Birthing Center with a full-service NICU; four Cardiac Catheterization labs; a full complement of diagnostic laboratory and imaging services; outpatient surgery; and a freestanding 60-bed Behavioral Health and Chemical Dependency facility.
In 1995 BMH decided that to keep pace with area growth and to continue to offer high-caliber services, it must affiliate with a large system that shares the hospital's nonprofit, mission-driven philosophy. After months of looking at possible partners, BMH chose Dignity Health, the largest faith-based hospital system in California. The affiliation was completed in 1996.

Central California Heart Institute
Most of us don't think about our heart and the incredible job it does each day. Over an average lifetime, the heart beats 2.5 billion times - that's one beat per second of every minute of every day. Although the heart is a strong, powerful organ, it is susceptible to disease and trauma. In some cases, people are born with defects of the heart, while others develop problems over a lifetime. Being aware of the associated risks and services available to prevent and treat heart disease are essential to living an active and healthy lifestyle. We rely on advanced technology, experienced cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, vascular surgeons and nurse specialists that work in teams to address the full scope of heart problems, whether common or complex.
Services offered for the treatment of cardiovascular disease by the Central California Heart Institute have repeatedly been recognized among the best in the nation by numerous independent research organizations. Our emphasis is on offering a comprehensive cardiovascular program that includes general, non-invasive and interventional diagnostics, treatment and surgical services to patients with diseases or disorders of the heart and vascular system. Surgical procedures include adult cardiac and general thoracic surgery, off-pump heart surgery, valve repair and replacement, as well as vascular surgery. Our cardiologists, cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons work as experienced teams of specialists to assure expert and personalized care. In addition, our patients benefit from the most recent and advanced diagnostic services, nurses with advanced training, patient education and a comprehensive rehabilitation program.
As a patient, you can expect the highest level of clinical and scientific excellence, coupled with an old-fashioned approach to medicine - what we like to think of as genuine caring from the heart.
